Founders Cup/Salver 2010 Q/F Preview

We have reached the business end of both the Founders Cup and Founders Salver for 2010 all remaining teams will no doubt have thoughts of lifting the trophy come May.

The Quarter Finals of both competitions’ are to be played on 21st January 2010, so let’s take a look at the teams still in the competition and their chances.

(Just to add the preview below is intended as a fun look at the draw)

Averages 2009
Competitions

West Surrey Pool League
Invitation Averages 2009

Thursday 24th September 2009 saw our second of 2 pre-season competitions.
Our host For the evening was our League sponsors Riley's Pool/Snooker Club.

With sixteen runners the draw was supprisingly spread out and in turn there were no big scalpings in the first round. Unfortunatly it was early doors for K. Harrison, C. Mansey, S. Colton, J. Dobson, W. Mckimming, S. Renoylds, B. King and C, Dobson.
The eight winners through to round two were: N. Richardson, D. Sims, C. Hawkins, M. Rasek, B. Noel, T. Harding, M. Chubb ad G. Groves.

We are now down to the Quarter Finals and things would get a little more tense.
Three of the four matches were over fairly quick with all having a 2-0 score line in the form of M. Rasek, B. Noel and M. Chubb going through first. The forth QTR Final was between N. Richardson and D. Sims. Neither would give in easily and this would be the only QTR match to go to a deciding frame which saw D. Sims taking the final frame and in turn the last Semi Final spot.

The First Semi Final match would be D. Sims Vs M. Rasek. With both fairly evenly matched neither would give an inch and so it is down to who would have the luck of the balls. This would fall in to the hands of M. Rasek takng the win 2-0.
The second semi final match would be our very own singles finalist M. Chubb up against Surrey County player B. Noel. This would be a battle of the best and only the best will make it. Both were trying there best to get through to the final but in the end it would go to the singles finalist M. Chubb with a 2-1 victory.

The Final
M. Rasek Vs M. Chubb
Frame 1
M. Rasek gets of to a flying start leaving M. Chubb in no position to fight back and so having to play safe right from the off. This would continue for the whole frame. Although M. Chubb started to make progress it would not be enough and M. Rasek takes the first frame with an impressive black from being snookered.

Frame 2
With M. Chubb breaking and coming up dry it left M. Rasek show his dominance and luck with full force. M. Chubb could do nothing apart from try to slow the game down by taking the ball and then playing safe. No matter what M. Chubb would do M. Rasek had an answer for it. For the second frame in a row M. Rasek would pot the black from a snooker and so taking the title of Invitation Averages Champion 2009.

Captains Cup 2009
Competitions

West Surrey Pool League
Captains Cup 2009

Thursday 17th September 2009 saw our first of 2 pre-season competitions.
Our host For the evening was our League sponsors Riley's Pool/Snooker Club.

Due to a few late cancelations and leaving a big gap in the draw it was decided to re-draw the competition. This was done by James Gregory and in full view for all to see.
With Last years Champion Ray Garrett unable to attend one thing was for sure, there would be a new champion for 2009. The question was who?, In this years field there is no clear cut favorite so let the games begin.

We found early winners in the form of Catherine Akehurst who had a suprise 2-1 win over Division One player Andy Tyrell. Peter Spence, Steven Strange, Alex Chubb, Dan Malan and James Gregory all winning there match 2-1. Our very own secretary Edd Marshall was on fire in his first match against Nick Wade with his second frame being won with a full clearence in a single visit.

The Quater finals would see all matches being won 2-0 to the like of Steven Strange over Peter Spence, Alex Chubb against Catherine Akehurst and stuart Daniels over Dan Malan. This just left Edd Marshall Vs James Gregory which would turn out to be more like a Final than a Qtr Final with the first frame resulting in a re-rack due to an impossible shot only to see it re-racked for a second time due to the black being pocketed on the break. Unfortunatley the might of James was just to much as he slipped through to the semi's.

The Semi's would consist of Steven Strange Vs Alex Chubb and Stuart Daniels Vs James Gregory. Still with no clear favorite any of the 4 could be aquireing the title of captians cup champion 2009. Steven would fight to the bitter end but fail to progress any further with Alex taking the win 2-1. Once again neither player James or Stuart would go down with a fight, Stuart was able to keep his nerve for longer and in turn earning the remaining place in the final.

This years Final would be Stuart Daniels Vs Alex Chubb with Stuart winning the toss.
As both players prepared to go to battle it was noted that for the second year running a finalist in the form of Stuart Daniels was without his own cue and using a Riley's Racker. Last years champion Ray Garret also used a Riley's Racker to take the title so was Alex doomed from the start? Should we all forget about expensive cues?

Well You'll have to watch to find out.

Summer Presentation 2009
WSPL News

I would just like to thank everyone that attended this years summer presentation.
We had for the second year a speed pool comp which was open to all.
This years defending champion was our very own Martin chubb who set an impressive 1m 07s to take last years winners trophy and £50.00 prize.

This year saw the committee take to the tables first and Steve Strange set the bench mark at 2m 21s. It did not take long for this time to be smashed by Alex Chubb with a time of 1m 39s. Alex's time was holding well until Gary Groves managed a time of 1m 24s, after a couple more rounds Gary Groves returned to the table as did Martin Chubb you could see that both wanted to win with both on an equal par but Martin managed to just pip Gary to the winning post only 2 seconds in front and a new record time of 1m 3s.

For the second year in a row Martin Chubb took the winners trophy and £50.00 prize money whilst Gary Groves picked up the runner up trophy.
We all had a short break before presentation in oder to refuel ourselves on what was a lovley spread of hot and cold buffet suplied free of charge by our sponsor Riley's. Our newest committee member Steven Strange was on the mic to present this years trophies which as always were certainly ones to put on show.

Presentation pics and speed pool video will be on the site as soon as poss.

Doubles 2009
Competitions

Doubles 2009

This years doubles attracted a field of 100 players (50 pairs). Up for grab was of course the title and £100 each to the winners with the finalists picking up half that amount.

Following a concise look at who won when and with who, there is a full report on the latest chapter of the fifteenth West Surrey Doubles.

Since the inaugural competition won by Trevor Howard and Kieron Hickey in 1994 there have been a total of 13 different pairs becoming Champions.

Andy Sutherland leads the way with five wins from his six finals. 1997 with Russell White, 2006 and 07 with England player Tom Kennedy and finally Mark Laxton in 2008 and 09.

Sasha Massam 1996, 99, Tom Kennedy 2006, 07 and Mark Laxton are next with two wins a piece.

One win from two finals are Gary Pickney and Kevin Kealey in 1995 and Neil Copping in 1999.

Finally with one win each are the aforementioned Trevor Howard / Kieran Hickey, Russell White 2007, Harry Senior / Roy Harman 1998, Tony Dorito / Paul Moseley in 2000, former professional Matt Cooke and Dave Hall 2001, Barry Sullivan / Mark Wright 2003, K Dore / D Bristow 2004, with Keith Reeves and Martin Chubb completing the list in 2005.

Singles 2009
Competitions

Singles 2009

This years event attracted a whopping 78 entries before the deadline and unfortunately there were a few late entries that had to be turned away (for next year if you wish to enter the Singles entries must be received by the deadline as the draw is done and published shortly after).

Rileys has now increased its 8-ball pool table capacity to 11 useable tables and with a starting field of 78 all the tables were required.

So to this years event, the draw again split into four groups and colour coded to include staggered start times, which again worked well and there were very few waiting around to play.

All rounds up to and including the fourth round (last 16) were best of 3 frames so plenty of chances for a shock or two and notably 2002 champion Craig Mansey losing out to the in form Surrey junior Josh Jones.

There were also some interesting ties along the way with Alex Chubb pushing his brother Martin to a decider in round two Edd Marshall and then Matt Braithwaite having golden opportunities to knock the defending champion Andy Sutherland out after leading 1-0 and missing easy chances in the next. Russell White rolled back the years to defeat Sam Elliott 2-0 before losing out to Des Jackson in the last eight.

Martin overcame two times mixed doubles champion John Muttick 3-1 in the quarter finals and then didnt miss against team mate Terry Harding (second in this years averages) winning 3-0. Terry made the semi final by winning the decider in a tight encounter with S Daniels. Andy progressed in his quarter final against Paul Collyer from the Princess A 3-0 before ending Des Jackson's run 3-1 in the semi final, however Des had his chances and a missed black in frame two turned out to be the key moment in the match.

So for the third time in a row the final will be contested by Martin Chubb (Crossley A) looking to avenge defeats in the last two years up against Andy Sutherland (George A) gunning for his fifth title on the spin.

The final will be played on Presentation night on 16th May 2009 at the Walton Comrades Club kicking off at 6.15 The English Pool Referees Association's general secretary Steve Brooker will once again be officiating.

Mixed Doubles 2009
CompetitionsMixed Doubles 2009

The Crossley Club was the venue for this years Mixed Doubles.

Plenty of banter throughout the evening mostly coming from the new faces and it turned out to be a fun and relaxed night. Unfortunately due to time and a bumper entry this year (well in excess of 16 pairs) the second Semi Final and Final were held over to the following week.

So two new faces on the winners rostrum for this years mixed doubles in the form of 1994 singles champion Trevor Howard (Fox & Flowerpot A) and the 2008 ladies singles Finalist Sarah Colton (Birch & Pines) both pictured below.

They came through a very tough part of the draw. On the way to this years final defeating Martin and Donna then squeezing a result against Surrey Junior star Josh Jones and his partner 2008 ladies singles champion Sarah Leeden before finally overcoming multiple winner and defending champions James and Cath. The Final, the first in 5 years not to feature John and Sandy Muttick who bowed out in round 1, featured two new faces in Kris Harrison and Karolyne Foster who with the aid of a couple of non attendances found themselves in the quarters without striking a ball in anger. This could be detrimental not knowing how the tables were playing and sitting out for quite a while, however this wasn’t the case as they won both matches and sneaking unnoticed into the final with 2-1 results in both games.

However the final proved one step too far for Kris and Karolyne as Trevor and Sarah's experience came to the for in a resounding 3-0 win. Trevor and Sarah both pick up engraved salvers and £70 between them, while Kris and Karolyne dont go home empty handed with salvers and £50 to split at the presentation night on 16th May 2009.

So congratulations to Trevor Howard and Sarah Leeden on becoming the 2009 champions and the 10th winners in all since the inaugural winners Ray Cassanove Penny Leckonby back in 1995. Leading the way are Bob and Anne Taylor with three wins (1997, 99 and 00) from their record five final appearances closely followed by John and Sandy Muttick with two wins (2005, 07) from four consecutive finals. Next is James Gregory also on two wins (2006, 08) the first with Cath Richardson and the second partnered by Cath Akehurst. Finally with one title to their names Ray Cassanove and Penny Leckonby (1995) Richard Lambert and Dawn Codgebrook (now Milton) in 1996, Fred Moeller and Sue O'Donnell (1998) David Penly and Jenny Eyre (2001) and now Trevor Howard and Sarah Colton completing the list in 2009.

ladies singles 2009
CompetitionsThe 2009 West Surrey Ladies Singles took place on the 19th March at Riley's Guildford.

With a starting field of 8 runners this was certainly another step in the right direction for Ladies Pool within West Surrey as across Surrey entries from the fairer sex are all in all low. Organizing the event fell to secretary Edd Marshall as his better half was in the tournament.

We know there are other Ladies out there who may want to get involved and perhaps start an all female team within the League, who knows.

With the absence of a number of high profile ladies last time round, this year included seven of the eight entries from last year.

Once again this was an opportunity for a new face to come to the for and perhaps another new name on the trophy for 2009 and Steph Powell has done just that by defeating the defending champion Sarah Leeden in five frames in this years final.

Since the inaugural competition won by Colette Bromhead in 1995 there have been a total of nine different Champions, Anne Taylor leads the way with five wins from her seven consecutive finals (1995-2001) Amanda McWilliams twice (2005-2006) Vicki Abott (2000) Gemma Adcock (2004) and Sarah Leeden (2008) all winning one of their two final appearances. Colette, Mel Applely, Sarah Parsons and now Steph Powell complete the list of Champions.

Draw and Results

Catherine Akehurst 1 v 2 Steph Powell

Claire Hawkins 0 v 2 Sarah Colton

Karolyne Foster 1 v 2 Sylvia Reynolds

Sarah Leeden 2 v 0 Donna Gregory

Steph eased past Cath Akehurst in a match that could have gone either way. Sarah Colton looked impressive beating Claire Hawkins 2-0 and new girl Sylvia Reynolds upset the form book by taking the deciding frame against Karolyne Foster and finally Sarah Leeden the defending champion cruised past Donna Gregory.

Semi Finals

Sarah Colton 0 v 2 Steph Powell

Sylvia Reynolds 0 v 2 Sarah Leeden

It wasn’t to be a repeat of last year's final as Sarah Colton missed several chances against Steph Powell eventually losing 2-0 in the second Semi Final Sarah Leeden was too strong for Sylvia running out by the same score.

The Final

Steph Powell 3-2 Sarah Leeden

Sarah Leeden got of to the perfect start taking the initial frame with relative ease and looked to be on course to retain her title she won 12 months ago by increasing her lead to 2-0. However from then on it was all about mistakes from Sarah and resolute play from Steph who clawed her way back into the final winning the next two frames to force a decider. The final frame followed the same pattern as the previous 4 frames where Sarah Leeden put herself in a winning position only to falter on the final few balls. This gave a Steph another chance and slowly but surely took control of the frame and eventually the match. Sarah will rue this as a chance missed to secure a second win in the event but for the new ladies champion Steph Powell a fitting end to a great night for her. Steph probably wasn’t the favourite at the start of play but by taking out both of last years finalists and Cath Akehurst in the first round she fully deserved her win in the end.

Thanks to all the players who attended.

Congratulations to Steph Powell on winning the event.

Founders Cup and Salver Semi Finals and Final
Competitions

The Semi Finals were again both held at the home of the league sponsers Riley's.

Founders Cup Semi Finals

George A 6 -v- 4 Chobham F.C

This always looked to be a close encounter on paper and it turned out to be just that. The George putting on the early pressure and taking a commanding 4-1 and 5-2 advantage before Chobham took the next two frames to close the gap to just one frame, However it was not to be for Chobham as Andy Sutherland cleared the table for theGeorge A to progress 6-4

Crossley A 6 -v- 4 Princess A

On paper this looked a one sided affair with the reigning league champions Croosley A highly tipped to breeze into the final. The Princess held their own early doors and it was frame for frame at 3-3 and looked like it could go either way. The second set however saw the Crossley A (with no doubt a few harsh words from captain Malcolm) ease to the line with Martin Chubb once again being the pick of the bunch.

Founders Salver Semi Finals

Blue Anchor A 6 -v- 5 George B

No fairytale for the George B as the 2008 Salver winners were beaten in a tense final frame decider to send the lads from the Blue Anchor A into this years final.

Princess B 6 -v- 5 Fox & Flowerpot A

Another close encounter that went the distance, it looked as though the Fox had it in the bag at one point but eventually this semi also took a last frame decider to split the teams. Bluey Noel coming out on top against 1994 singles champion Trevor Howard.

Founders Cup Final

George A 6 -v- 1 Crossley A

Playing at one of the league's premier venues (Woking Snooker Club) and thanks to james for organising the night, this looked to be a repeat of the league game played two weeks before. However this time once the George A nicked the first two frames they didnt look back with Mark Laxton defeating Martin Chubb and Anthony Rourke sealing a resounding 6-1 win for the newly crowned League Champions.

Founders Salver Final

Princess B 6 -v- 1 Blue Anchor A

West Byfleet hosted this clash and a big crowd turned up to see if the Blue Anchor could go all the way and win this years Salver against the experienced Princess B. Unfortunately it was not be as the chances the Blue Anchor made were not converted to wins on the score sheet. The final score suggests a thumping in the final but two or three frames could have gone either way.

Well done to all four teams on making the finals and to especially to the winners the George A and Princess B and I look forward to seeing you all at this years presentation.
